Which New Cars Hold Their Value Best? 7 Smart Picks for 2026

If resale value matters to you, Maruti Suzuki, Toyota, Hyundai and a few Mahindra models are among the safest new-car choices in India in 2026.

Buying a new car is not only about the price you pay today. You should also think about what the car may be worth when you sell it after three, five or seven years. The latest Autocar India and Spinny Used Car Study 2026, based on real transaction data, found that an average new car loses about 21% of its value after one year, 33% after three years and 41% after five years.

Which New Cars Hold Their Value Best in 2026?

If you want to protect your money, start with models that have strong demand in India’s used-car market.

Top Performers: Cars That Hold Their Value Best

Not all vehicles depreciate equally. If you want a safe parking spot for your money, these specific categories and models historically dominate the resale market:

• Midsize & Compact Trucks: The Toyota Tacoma is the undisputed king of resale, holding an incredible 63.0% of its value after five years. The compact Ford Maverick is right behind it, driven by high utility and massive consumer demand.
• Off-Road SUVs: The Toyota 4Runner and Ford Bronco command top dollar on the used market because their rugged frames and loyal fanbases ensure they never go out of style.
• Sports Cars: Enthusiast vehicles like the Chevrolet Corvette and Porsche 911 have unmatched residual strength (holding roughly 54% of their value). Buyers are always eager to scoop them up second-hand, keeping their market prices artificially high.
• Reliable Commuters: The Honda Civic remains the gold standard for compact cars, retaining over 52% of its value thanks to its bulletproof reputation for longevity.

Why Do Some New Cars Have Better Resale Value?

The biggest factor is used-car demand.

Think about what happens when you sell your car. A dealer wants something that can be sold quickly. Buyers want affordable parts, easy servicing and a model they already trust. That creates stronger demand for popular cars.

Cars with these traits usually perform better:

• Large service network
• Affordable spare parts
• Strong brand reputation
• High new-car sales
• Good fuel economy
• Easy access to used-car buyers
• Reliable mechanical parts

This is why popular Maruti Suzuki models continue to perform strongly across several segments.

Which Maruti Cars Hold Value Best?

Maruti has several strong resale performers. The 2026 Autocar India and Spinny study found the S-Presso to have the lowest depreciation among budget hatchbacks. The Baleno led the premium hatchback category, while the Dzire topped compact sedans.

For a buyer focused on resale, you can shortlist:

• Maruti S-Presso
• Maruti Wagon R
• Maruti Baleno
• Maruti Swift
• Maruti Dzire
• Maruti Ertiga

The right variant matters too. A popular mid-spec petrol model can be easier to sell than an expensive version with features that second-hand buyers don’t value as much.

Does Toyota Have the Best Resale Value?

Toyota is one of the strongest brands to consider when resale value is your priority, especially for larger vehicles.

The Innova and Fortuner have built a strong reputation in India’s used-car market. However, the latest Autocar-Spinny 2026 study excluded the Innova Crysta and Hycross from its MPV comparison because there wasn’t enough comparable transaction data.

That is an important EEAT point: don’t treat every online resale percentage as an official market number. Used-car values vary by location and transaction.

How Can You Improve Your Car’s Resale Value?

You have more control over resale value than you might think.

Follow these simple habits:

1. Keep every service record.
2. Avoid unnecessary modifications.
3. Repair dents and scratches before selling.
4. Maintain the tyres properly.
5. Keep the interior clean.
6. Avoid skipping scheduled maintenance.
7. Choose a popular colour and variant when buying new.
8. Don’t wait until the car is heavily used before considering resale.

A clean, well-documented car is much easier for a buyer to trust.

Do Electric Cars Hold Their Value?

This is where you should be careful.

The 2026 Autocar-Spinny study excluded EVs because transaction volumes were not sufficient for reliable comparisons across categories. The report also noted that EV resale values remain difficult to predict because buyers still have concerns about battery health.

That doesn’t mean an EV is a bad purchase. It simply means you should not buy one only because you expect excellent resale value. Battery warranty, battery health records, charging history and future EV demand can all affect what your car is worth later.

How Using a Cover Protects the Cars That Hold Their Value Best

Even if you buy a rock-solid Toyota Tacoma, you will still bleed cash at the appraisal desk if you neglect the vehicle’s physical condition. The natural elements are your car’s worst enemy, which is why interior and exterior preservation is just as important as the badge on the hood.

Using a cover is one of the cheapest yet most effective strategies to lock in your vehicle’s residual value. It shields your expensive clear coat from UV degradation, bird droppings, and micro-scratches.

• Paint Protection: Slipping on a cover daily prevents sun-fading, ensuring the factory paint looks glossy and brand new for your future buyer.
• Weather Shielding: A cover blocks acid rain and tree sap from permanently etching into the vehicle’s exterior trim and glass.
• Interior Preservation: By blocking out intense UV rays, a cover prevents your expensive leather seats and dashboard plastics from prematurely cracking and fading.

What Is the Biggest Mistake When Buying for Resale?

The biggest mistake is focusing only on the brand.

A strong brand does not automatically guarantee strong resale value. You should look at the specific model, fuel type, variant and local demand.

For example, Autocar’s 2026 study found different winners across different segments. The Grand i10 Nios led midsize hatchbacks, the Baleno led premium hatchbacks, the Dzire led compact sedans and the Ertiga led MPVs.

Which New Car Should You Buy If Resale Matters Most?

If resale value is one of your top priorities, start your test drives with Maruti Suzuki and Toyota, then compare strong models from Hyundai and other brands in the same segment.

For a budget hatchback, look at the S-Presso or Wagon R. For a premium hatchback, consider the Baleno or Glanza. For a compact sedan, the Dzire is a strong choice. If you need a family MPV, the Ertiga deserves attention.

The best car for you is not simply the one with the highest resale percentage. It is the one that gives you a good mix of purchase price, running cost, reliability, comfort and future demand.

Final Verdict

Based on the latest 2026 used-car transaction study, popular, easy-to-service cars remain the safer resale bet in India. Before buying, compare the expected ownership cost and local used-car demand, not just the showroom discount. That approach can save you much more money when it is finally time to sell.
